Community Mobile Allotments by the Royal Victoria Docks, LB Newham,
in London
Project Description

Location: Under the Silvertown Flyover at the edge of the Royal Victoria Dock's Tidal Basin.
An urban garden is proposed to occupy the unused, forgotten spaces under the Silvertown way Flyover. The mobile allotments provides the local communities an opportunity to grow their own greens and access to organic food while minimising the use of waste, labour and financial resources. The community mobile allotments can be easily transported to take advantage of the optimum position to receive daylight for the growth of the vegetation. The mobile units playfully transform the spaces under the flyover to a green space and improves the site aesthetically and environmentally.

Design Strategy
The space proposed is located in an opportune area that could serve as a way to connect the local communities to benefit from the unused spaces. In addition the space is covered, contains a very interesting structural character that lend itself to this interesting use of urban garden that compliment the site in the docks and respond to and interact with the water and the public realm around the dock edge.

Environmental Strategy:
The mobile allotments are configured to respond to the environment.

Winter: During the months between Nov-February the allotments are moved inside to take advantage of the UV lights provided under the flyover.
Summer: During the months between March-October the the allotments are moved outside to take advantage of the natural daylight.
