Network-rail London Station Seating Design:
‘Sitting Pretty’: Game Before You Train

Project Description

Our research-based design tests solutions for future of station seating; that transforms and enhances passenger waiting experience at stations. Research highlights that waiting for a train in an unpleasant environment may seem like a longer wait than it is. By improving the waiting environment, which enhances passenger experience and transforms station seating, passengers waiting time will be more enjoyable and the duration of the wait will seem shorter.

Our proposal for the ‘Sitting Pretty’ is called the ‘Game Before You Train’ which acts as a multi-functional hub that addresses contemporary passenger needs of varying ages and accessibility. A creative station seat design that is a colourful hub to enable visual cues to enhance way-finding at the station concourse and acts as a central feature of the waiting area. It includes a built-in table to place a cup of coffee, phone charging facilities, to work on a laptop and has an integrated game appealing to passengers of all ages and families travelling together.

Design Strategy

Our game design has been inspired by Table Football but has a twist in that up to four players can play or can be played alone or played with a fellow passenger. The seats are arranged around the gaming table to encourage social interaction between two passengers/strangers, engaging in a friendly way hence improving the passenger experience in the station, while celebrating the London Festival of Architecture.
